The Tata Nano is a proposed city car — a small, affordable, rear-engined, four-passenger car aimed primarily at the Indian market — first presented by India's Tata Motors at the 9th annual Auto Expo on January 10, 2008 at Pragati Maidan in New Delhi, India.[4] The prefix "Nano" derives from the Greek root 'nanos', meaning dwarf — as with nanometre. "Nano" also means "small" in Gujarati, the native language of the Tata family,[5] founders of the Tata Group.

The project has literally become India's claim-for-fame in the international-media due to Tata Motors' innovation in developing the car, as well as keeping it low in price. The car itself is expected to boost the Indian Economy, create entrepreneurial-opportunities across India[6][7], as well as expand the Indian car market by 65%[8]. The car was envisioned by renowned industrialist, Ratan Tata, Chairman of the Tata Group and Tata Motors, who has described it as an eco-friendly "people's car". Nano has been greatly appreciated by many sources and the media for its low-cost[9][10] and eco-friendly initiatives which include using compressed-air as fuel[11] and an electric-version (E-Nano)[12][13]. Tata Group is expected to mass-manufacture the Nano in very large quantities, particularly the electric-version, and, besides selling them in India, to also export them world-wide[14][15][16].

Critics of the car have questioned its safety in India (where reportedly 90,000 people are killed in road-accidents every year[17]), and have also criticised the pollution that it would cause[18] (including criticism by Nobel Peace Prize-winning scientist, Rajendra Pachauri[19]). However, Tata Motors has promised that it would definitely release Nano's eco-friendly variants alongside the gasoline-variant[20][21].

Due to strong and persistent opposition to Tata's Singur car-factory by Mamta Banerjee, Tata Motors ultimately decided to cease operations in Singur on 2 October 2008 and started manufacturing Tata Nano at its Pantnagar plant. On her protests and the consequent pullout, the media heavily critcised her and The Telegraph even said[22]: "India is being raped by those who profess to be her soldiers, the guardians of peace." Financial Times reported[23]: "If ever there were a symbol of India’s ambitions to become a modern nation, it would surely be the Nano, the tiny car with the even tinier price-tag. A triumph of homegrown engineering, the $2,200 (€1,490, £1,186) Nano encapsulates the dream of millions of Indians groping for a shot at urban prosperity. That process has stalled...No big economy has prospered without undergoing a huge, often brutal, shift of labour from the countryside to cities and from farms to factories...There is a yawning gap with China. India’s information technology and service sector, no matter how dynamic, simply cannot absorb enough labour. To truly shine, India will need millions, perhaps tens of millions, more manufacturing jobs. Why has it not created them?"

Currently, Tata Motors is reportedly manufacturing Nano at its existing Pantnagar (Uttarakhand) plant and a plant has been proposed for Sanand (Gujarat)[24][25], though it's yet to be seen whether it would be successful or not (like Singur). Uttarakhand Chief Minister BC Khanduri reiterated on 4 October 2008 that his government would welcome the Tata Group, if it opts to establish Nano's plant in Uttarakhand state[26]. The company is hoping to produce 50 Nanos per day in Pantnagar by January–March 2009[27]. Ratan Tata has said that Nano will be brought within set timelines[28]. Not many dealers will be appointed till March 2009. The company will bank on existing dealer network for Nano initially.[29] The new Nano Plant could have a capacity of 5,00,000 units, compared to 3,00,000 for Singur. Gujarat has also agreed to match all the incentives offered by West Bengal government.[30]

The car is expected to get serious competition from electric-cars like Tara Tiny and Oreva Super, both reportedly being cheaper than Tata Nano.

History of Fireworks in India
In early part of 19th century, `Bhakthapu' or Bengal Lights, the small mudpot, emanating bright yellow lights, became the first ever firework manufactured in India.
The first Fireworks factory in India was set up at Calcutta by Mr.Das Gupta. Initially, he experimented with colour matches and later with gerbs, fountains and large size crackers. Subsequently, the focus of the fireworks industry shifted from Calcutta to Sivakasi, thanks to the enterprising efforts of Mr. Shanmugam Nadar and Mr. Iya Nadar.Restrictions in import during the Second World war, posed a challenge to the local industry, which took the first step in indigenising various products. During the year 1940, the Indian Explosives Act was enforced whereby a system of licensing was introduced for manufacture, possession and sale of fireworks. This Act paved the way for organised sectors in the Industry. Sivakasi, soon became a home for fireworks.

A Mahalakshmi temple called 'Sripuram' and made of more than a ton of pure gold will glitter and gleam under the sun on August 24 when it is unveiled for consecration by the Sri Narayani Peetam headed by a 31-year-old godman who calls himself Narayani Amma. Devotees hail the temple as 'one of the wonders of the world' and say that it is the only temple covered fully with gold.
More than 400 gold and coppersmiths from the Tirupathi Thirumala Devasthanam are said to have worked for six years to craft the Rs. 600-crore golden temple located on 55,000 sq ft of land on a 100-acre salubrious stretch in Malaikodi, about 6 km from Vellore in north Tamil Nadu. According to official sources, the gold bars were purchased through RBI in "a transparent manner "
First the coppersmiths set to work creating a copper base on the temple structure with engravings and etchings before the gold, beaten into nine layers of foils, was draped around it. The sanctum sanctorum will hold the deity of Mahalakshmi made of stone granite, but covered with gold protection layers. (Kavacham - adornments).

Tamil Nadu Electricity Board to be restructured

CHENNAI: The State government has planned to restructure the 51-year-old Tamil Nadu Electricity Board (TNEB) by splitting it into a holding company and two subsidiary companies.
On Friday, Electricity Minister Arcot N. Veeraswami will hold talks with labour unions in the TNEB at the Board’s headquarters.
“Chief Minister [M. Karunanidhi] has advised me to assure the unions during the talks that there will be no privatisation,” Mr Veeraswami told reporters at Athipattu (about 35 km north of the city), after reviewing the progress of the execution of the Vallur thermal power project and expansion projects of the North Chennai Thermal Power Station.
While one subsidiary company would handle transmission, another would take care of generation and distribution. The TNEB chairman would head the holding company and the subsidiaries.
[On Friday, the Centre intimated to the State its decision to extend the deadline for restructuring the Tamil Nadu Electricity Board by 15 days. It also advised the State to establish a transmission utility immediately and prepare a “road map” for further re-organisation of the Board.]
Noting that the latest deadline would expire by October 10, Mr Veeraswami, who explained the rationale behind the government’s plan, said this had been mandated under the 2003 Electricity Act. “Tamil Nadu and Kerala are the States which have not yet restructured their State Electricity Boards,” he said.
He said that his Kerala counterpart [A.K. Balan] spoke to him a few days ago and wanted to know the position of Tamil Nadu. At that time, he told the Kerala Minister that Tamil Nadu had sought some more time.
Asked whether the State would ask for further extension of the deadline, Mr Veeraswami replied that the Central government had now clearly conveyed to the State that no more extension would be given. Power crisis
On the issue of tackling the problem of power shortage, the Electricity Minister said steps were being taken to offset the loss of wind energy. Captive power generation sets would produce 170 MW, including 100 MW from the sets that would run on furnace oil. Cogeneration in sugar mills would provide 200 MW and biomass power 55 MW. The Basin Bridge plant, maintained by the TNEB, would generate 90 MW, using diesel instead of naptha.
As for tapping 1000 MW from captive generation sets lying with industry, Mr Veeraswami said they could either supply the quantum of power to the TNEB or meet the requirements on their own. For implementing this plan, 1,200 kilolitres to 1,500 KL would be required every day. Oil companies were willing to provide diesel for such sets at a higher rate. Instead of Rs. 37 per litre, the companies were ready to sell the fuel at Rs. 47. A few days ago, the Chief Minister wrote to the Petroleum Minister Murli Deora to permit the sale of diesel at the lesser rate until summer.
The Union Minister for Communications A. Raja had taken up the matter with Mr Deora. The Principal Secretary (Energy) Smitha Nagaraj was in constant touch with petroleum officials.

World Bank to help developing economies

Washington (AP): The World Bank agreed to help developing countries strengthen their economies, bolster their financial systems, maintain growth and protect the poor against the financial turmoil roiling international markets.
The head of the bank's policy-setting committee, Mexican Finance Minister Agustin Carstens, and World Bank President Robert Zoellick announced the commitment at the end of a daylong meeting on Sunday.
Zoellick said the financial crisis "has been a man-made catastrophe. The actions and responses to overcome it lie in our hands."
He said as the current crisis has unfolded, people in the United States and Europe reacted first with confusion, then anger and then fear.
"Those natural reactions will spread around the world as the impact spreads," Zoellick said. "We need to take them seriously."
He said developing countries , many of them already hit by high prices for energy and food, risk serious setbacks to their efforts to improve the lives of their populations from any prolonged tightening of credit or a sustained global slowdown
"The poorest and must vulnerable groups risk the most serious - and in some cases permanent damage," Zoellick said.
Zoellick said the financial crisis underscored the need to modernize multilateralism and markets for a new global economy.
He said the bank and its sister institution, the International Monetary Fund, must insure that as governments and publics turn their attention to domestic matters they do not step back from their commitment to provide billions in aid to poor countries.
"Aid flows must be maintained," Zoellick said. "Today's meeting of ministers was unanimous in that regard."

Brand advertising wars in the country are no longer the preserve of soft drink majors. The new direct-to-home (DTH) players, who have so far been competing on the telecom front, are now battling for mindshare with their smart ad campaigns.

For instance, Reliance ADAG’s Big TV and Bharti Airtel’s Digital TV have unleashed a new ad game of sorts. While Bharti Airtel ran advertisement teasers for its new DTH business for a week before officially launching the service today, arch rival Big TV, launched in August, unleashed its counter campaign this Monday.
While Airtel’s DTH campaign has animated creatures running around a chair chanting, “See you at home soon”, the Big TV ad uses the same set up and even the punchline with a few additions. Big TV’s campaign hence reads ‘See you at home with 32 cinema halls’, ‘See you at home with digital picture and sound’ and ‘See you at home with over 200 TV channels.’
It’s a close match and an expensive affair too. It’s estimated that the monthly ad spends by the five existing players are around Rs 30-40 crore, making it one of the costliest product category in recent times, similar to the well-documented battles of the two cola companies.
“However, it should be noted that the current market leaders in the DTH segment – Dish TV and Tata Sky – are not fighting among themselves and it’s only the new entrants that are locking horns,” an expert from the sector (who did not wish to be quoted) explained.
Earlier this year, PepsiCo’s move to create a ‘Youngistaan’ for its consumers marked the beginning of the spoof war between the cola majors.
The first of the ads saw actors Ranbir Kapoor, Deepika Padukone and Shah Rukh Khan enact a comic scenario around an extra-terrestrial being. In response, Coca-Cola spoofed with its Sprite ad sporting a punchline ‘Seedhi Baat, No Bakwaas’. The ad featured the look-alikes of the three characters seen in the Pepsi commercial.
In response to the Thums Up ad featuring Akshay Kumar, PepsiCo created its own spoof taking the ad-war a step forward. This is not the first time that the two cola majors have locked horns. PepsiCo’s Mountain Dew and Coca-Cola’s Thumps Up have indulged in spoof wars right from 2003.
Taking a dig on ad wars in different product categories, brand specialist Harish Bijoor said, “Most of these campaigns are not backed by insights but are aimed at making potential consumers sit up and take notice. It may not translate into actual sales.”
However, Bijoor maintained that when one brand takes on a rival brand thorough advertising, it doesn’t do much for the individual brand but does wonders for the category in question.

Zee Entertainment Enterprises Ltd, one of the country's leading entertainment groups, is all set to launch its Tamil channel again. Zee Tamizh, the new 24 hours entertainment channel, will be launched with in six months so said by the group's South CEO G Ramprasad yesterday. According to him, they will come out with a Malayalam channel too along with the Tamil channel.Ramprasad told this correspondent, "The Tamil channel world is not new to Zee Group. We launched Bharathi TV, an entertainment channel, 5 years back which was a failure due to many reasons. What we lacked was technical expertise as well as good content. We hope that our new team will be able to handle the channel now and make it a huge success."The company, he said, had recruited V Chandrasekhar as the business head for Zee Tamizh and is scouting for a person to lead the Malayalam channel. The group is also planning to distribute the channel to all subscribers through DTH players like Sun, Tata and Dish with clear signals. Presently, there are 20 Tamil channels among which 13 are general entertainment channels, five music and two are news channels - Sun and Jaya. Soon Kalaignar will also launch a 24 hours news channel.

VELLOR: Steel magnate Lakshmi Mittal’s ArcelorMittal, which produces around 10 per cent of the world’s steel and has presence in over 60 countries, is putting up a steel component-manufacturing unit, at an estimated cost of Rs 100 crore, in collaboration with Mumbai-based Dhamm Steels in Ranipet in Vellore district.
Production is expected to begin at the unit in the next few months. Construction work has already begun in the 24-acre plot allotted to it by SIPCOT in Phase III in Ranganathapuram village, adjacent to the proposed Leather Special Economic Zone.
Roads and other infrastructure are being developed in the area. Power lines are being erected.
Nearby villagers are hopeful that the industry would provide them job opportunities.Over 500 acres of land has been already acquired for setting up the SEZ and other non-SEZ industrial clusters in the locality.
The company plans to manufacture finished steel components for earth-moving equipment manufacturers, construction and power industries.
The entry of ArcelorMittal in SIPCOT has propelled industrial growth in the locality.
After SIPCOT allotted land for ArcelorMittal in March this year, an engineering and food processing cluster of industries applied for space and their papers are being processed.
Another 30 units, mostly making components for the automotive and engineering industries, have also sought land and infrastructure in the locality.
One of the reasons for the entry of the steel giant in this part of Tamil Nadu could be the proximity to air and sea ports,which are around 100km away. If the Sriperumbudur greenfield airport becomes a reality, the airport could come closer to Ranipet by 40km.
Ranipet is also close to the neighbouring states of Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh and the movement of raw materials and finished goods, manpower recruitment etc could easily be mobilised.
The recently developed four-laning of the national highway (and the six-laning in the pipeline) that passes through this industrial belt and the focus of the State Government to make this region a part of the Industrial Corridor (from Chennai to Hosur) are other factors that provide the boost to new ventures.

Indian central bank steps in to prevent run on ICICI

The Reserve Bank of India stepped in yesterday to prevent a run on ICICI Bank, reassuring investors and depositors that India's second-largest lender was in sound financial health.
"Based on rumours regarding the financial strength of ICICI Bank, depositors are withdrawing cash at its ATMs and branches in some locations," the central bank warned.
However, the central bank said that ICICI had enough liquidity to meet the needs of its depositors and the bank and its international subsidiaries were well capitalised. The RBI said that it had made arrangements to provide adequate liquidity to ICICI to meet the demands of its account holders.
KV Kamath, ICICI's chief executive and one of India's most prominent businessmen, yesterday appealed to depositors not to panic, saying rumours that were spreading about the bank in some parts of the country were "baseless and malicious".
The bank said in a statement that it had a "very strong capital position with a net worth of $10bn" and its capital adequacy ratio of 13.4 per cent was one of the highest in the local banking industry, above the regulatory requirement of 9 per cent.
ICICI also said its UK subsidiary, ICICI Bank UK, had no exposure to US subprime debt and no non-performing loans.
Shares in ICICI, which fell 14 per cent on Monday and a further 7.2 per cent early yesterday, closed up almost 9 per cent at Rs535.55.
The scare over ICICI is one of the first signs that Indian investors are concerned that the US crisis may hit local financial institutions.
Analysts had identified ICICI as one of the most exposed to a downturn in US markets. Last month, the bank declared an exposure of about $81m to senior bonds of Lehman Brothers, the US investment bank, and said it would have to make an additional provision of $28m.
Rumours that the bank was in financial strife were spread by text message and word of mouth, sparking a brief panic on September 24, but they were quickly quelled by assurances from bank management and the country's regulators.
So far, Indian policymakers have regarded the local economy as relatively immune to the credit crunch that has been taking its toll on banks in the US, UK and continental Europe.
In spite of volatile stock and currency markets, Palaniappan Chidambaram, the finance minister, has told investors that regulators had no concerns about Indian banks.
"There is nothing to worry about the Indian market. We are suffering the consequences of turbulence around the world," Mr Chidambaram said yesterday. "India is still a very attractive place to invest."
Describing ICICI as a well capitalised and regulated bank, he said the RBI statement offered reassurance that depositors' cash was safe.

At least 144 people were crushed to death Tuesday when hundreds of worshippers fell over one another following a stampede at an ancient hilltop temple complex in the Mehrangarh fort here in Rajasthan in one of the worst tragedies of its kind in India, officials said.
An estimated 300 people were injured and some battled for life in hospitals as temple and government officials groped in the dark over what led to the horrific tragedy at the Chamunda Mata temple in the heart ofHours later, some people were frantically running from one hospital to another looking for their missing kin. All over Jodhpur, numerous families prepared to light funeral pyres.

Home Secretary S.N. Thanvi told IANS that 144 people had been declared dead. He said the figure was expected to go up because many of the injured were in critical condition.

The disaster took place around 6 a.m., less than three hours after the temple -- built in 1460 in the imposing fort -- opened for prayers on the occasion of Navaratri. According to one account, 8,000-10,000 men, women and children were gathered in the complex, using a narrow pathway leading to the temple.

Almost all the dead were believed to be males because the stampede took place in the male section of two parallel and winding barricades set up on a pathway on the mountain slope.

Survivors recalled how an unexpected panic run killed so many -- in just 30 minutes.

'Everything moved so far that we did not even understand what happened,' said Kamal, a 24-year-old young man who was in the queue of devotees on the hill. 'Suddenly we saw people run and fall over each other. By god's grace, we saved ourselves.'

Added Rammurti, a 30-year-old man: 'I was in the middle of a very long queue. People had started to gather since early morning, since 3 a.m. All of a sudden people started to run and fall on one another. I escaped but my feet got crushed.'

Not everyone was that lucky.

'I am trying to locate my only son,' pleaded Kamla, a woman with tears in her eyes. 'I have been to two hospitals but I cannot find him. Please help me.'

It was one of the worst tragedies of its kind in the country. Earlier this year 145 people died in a stampede at the Naina Devi shrine in Himachal Pradesh.

The stampede Tuesday occurred about 150 feet from the shrine when the devotees were rushing downhill. With no motorable road reaching up to the temple, it was left to devotees to carry the dead and wounded for about half a kilometre from where they were put into ambulances and private vehicles to reach the hospital.

Some men carried the barely living on their shoulders. Three to four men formed groups to carry the bodies physically in the absence of stretchers.

Explained Akash, a visitor to the temple: 'I must have brought two or three injured on my back down the hill. The scene was very bad. Bodies lay here and there. The injured were crying in pain.'

Home Minister G.C. Kataria called it 'a massive tragedy' and said the stampede perhaps started when a male devotee slipped and fell on the five-or-six-feet-wide path, triggering panic run that led to so many deaths.

According to Kataria, after one man fell, the barricades gave way, and the others coming down the hill also began to roll down the pathway. 'People just kept falling over one another,' he said.

Numbed by the tragedy, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh expressed 'shock and grief' over the deaths. 'He has conveyed his sympathy and condolences to the bereaved families,' said a statement from the office of Manmohan Singh who is now in France.

Congress spokesman Manish Tiwari said: 'We express grief over the deaths.' Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) president Rajnath Singh also voiced 'deep condolences' to the victims and their families.

The Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) urged the central government to form disaster management teams during major festivals to prevent such recurring tragedies.

The temple is located in the massive Mehrangarh fort in Jodhpur. It is one of the best maintained forts in India, and a major tourist attraction in Rajasthan.

Chamunda was the favourite goddess of Rao Jodha, the king of Jodhpur. He brought her idol from his old capital of Mandore in 1460 and installed it at the Mehrangarh fort. The goddess remains the patron deity of Jodhpur's royal family. Jodhpur town, about 330 km from the state capital Jaipur.

JODHPUR, India (Reuters) - At least 200 people died in a stampede at a temple in Rajasthan as Hindus gathered to begin one of the most important religious festivals of the year, police said on Tuesday.

A handful of people fell while climbing a steep slope towards the Chamunda temple, sited inside a hilltop fort near the city of Jodhpur, triggering the crush, a Reuters photographer at the scene said.
"People were falling over one another. Many ran but were trampled under the feet of thousands," Anubhav, a witness who only gave his first name, said.
Other witnesses said too many people were trying to pass through a narrow part of the climb at the same time. Many suffocated after they fell.
"We have a final figure of 147 people died and 55 injured," Rajiv Dasoth, an inspector-general with the Rajasthan police, said. "The situation is under control and all the injured are being taken care of in hospitals."
Officials said the crowds were especially large on Tuesday, as pilgrims gathered for the start of the nine-day Navratri festival.
"Some people fell on a ramp leading to the temple and it caused more casualties," Dasoth said, adding a barricade separating women and children from men broke, leading to more casualties.
Local television showed volunteers carrying bodies and trying to revive them on the street. One child cried over her father's lifeless body, wailing "Daddy, please get up".
In India, stampedes are relatively common at temples, where thousands of people gather to pray during festivals and police fail to control the surging worshippers.
Last month, a similar crush outside a Hindu temple in the mountains of northern India killed at least 145 pilgrims.
Authorities ordered an investigation into that disaster, which occurred after rumours of a landslide triggered panic among pilgrims at the Naina Devi temple in Himachal Pradesh.
In January 2005, at least 265 Hindu pilgrims, including several women and children, were killed in a stampede near a remote temple in Maharashtra.
In Rajasthan on Tuesday, dead bodies were piled high in a local hospital, while the injured writhed in pain, the Reuters photographer said.
"We will definitely conduct an inquiry and if we find people were negligent, we will definitely take action," Rajasthan Home Minister Gulab Chand Kataria told reporters

The person standing to the extreme rightin the picture is none other than Hithendran along with his family members.He is 16 yr old ,son of Ashokans and both of them are doctors.On 23rd of september Hithendran would have never thought that it could be his last day of his life.It seems that he took his dad’s vehicle and went to his friends house.While he was returning from there, he was hit by a goods vehicle and had a big blow on his head. He was rushed to hospital and later it has been informed to his parents that their son’s brain is dead and cannot do anymore.Since both of them were doctors, they understood the condition of their son and informed to the hospital officials that they want to donate their son’s organs.In the mean time a 9 yr girl was in critical situation and she has to undergo an immediate heart transplant surgery and she was on the edge of her life. So it has been decided that Hitendran’s heart to be transplanted to that 9 yr girl.But the problem was in the transportation of the heart from the hospital after the operation.So there came a request from the Dr.Cherian’s heart Foundation to the Commisioner of Police Mr.R.Sekar to clear the traffic.So with the help of the Joint Commissioner Mr.Sunil Kumar the plan was made.The heart has to be transporated from Apollo Hospitals,Teynampet to Forntier Hospitals at mogappair.This should be done as soon as possible.So It has been ordered that,all traffic signals in that route should turn green.Immediately after the operation of heart, it was palced in an Ice container.The doctor with that box just went on inside the police vehicle instead of an Ambulance.Understanding the situation the police constable who was the driver of that patrol vehicle , started it and went on with a flying start.He drove the car at a maximum speed of 120 km/hr and went on to reach the hospital within 11 mins ,taking the maximum risk.Meanwhile the traffic police did a pretty good job by clearing the traffic and made the signals to turn green.When asked to the Police Constable who drove the car”It was maximum speed with car since i started driving.I dont know how i drove it in such a great speed”said with fully satisfied voice since he saved a life.The heart was transplanted to the the 9 yr old girl and the operation took place for nearly 6 hrs and was successfully done.The girl is under scanner and she is in recovery room.The girl should be very thankful to hithendran for his heart,to Ashokans,to doctors and importantly to the traffic police.Finally the father of Hithendran said that the meaning for the name Hithendran is The lover of Heart..A sad demise day ended with a victory for humanity. The first pictures of chickens in Europe are found on Corinthian pottery of the 7th century BCE. The poet Cratinus (mid-5th century BCE, according to the later Greek author Athenaeus) calls the chicken "the Persian alarm". In Aristophanes's comedy The Birds (414 BCE) a chicken is called "the Median bird", which points to an introduction from the East. Pictures of chickens are found on Greek red figure and black-figure pottery.
In ancient Greece, chickens were still rare and were a rather prestigious food for symposia. Delos seems to have been a centre of chicken breeding.
An early domestication of chickens in Southeast Asia is probable, since the word for domestic chicken (*manuk) is part of the reconstructed Proto-Austronesian language (see Austronesian languages). Chickens, together with dogs and pigs, were the domestic animals of the Lapita culture, the first Neolithic culture of Oceania.
Chickens were spread by Polynesian seafarers and reached Easter Island in the 12th century BCE, where they were the only domestic animal, with the possible exception of the Polynesian Rat (Rattus exulans). They were housed in extremely solid chicken coops built from stone. Traveling as cargo on trading boats, they reached the Asian continent via the islands of Indonesia and from there spread west to Europe and western Asia.
The Romans used chickens for oracles, both when flying ("ex avibus") and when feeding ("auspicium ex tripudiis"). The hen ("gallina") gave a favourable omen ("auspicium ratum"), when appearing from the left (Cic.,de Div. ii.26), like the crow and the owl.
For the oracle "ex tripudiis" according to Cicero (Cic. de Div. ii.34), any bird could be used, but normally only chickens ("pulli") were consulted. The chickens were cared for by the pullarius, who opened their cage and fed them pulses or a special kind of soft cake when an augury was needed. If the chickens stayed in their cage, made noises ("occinerent"), beat their wings or flew away, the omen was bad; if they ate greedily, the omen was good.
In 249 BCE, the Roman general Publius Claudius Pulcher had his chickens thrown overboard when they refused to feed before the battle of Drepana, saying "If they won't eat, perhaps they will drink." He promptly lost the battle against the Carthaginians and 93 Roman ships were sunk. Back in Rome, he was tried for impiety and heavily fined.
In 161 BCE a law was passed in Rome that forbade the consumption of fattened chickens. It was renewed a number of times, but does not seem to have been successful. Fattening chickens with bread soaked in milk was thought to give especially delicious results. The Roman gourmet Apicius offers 17 recipes for chicken, mainly boiled chicken with a sauce. All parts of the animal are used: the recipes include the stomach, liver, testicles and even the pygostyle (the fatty "tail" of the chicken where the tail feathers attach).
The Roman author Columella gives advice on chicken breeding in his eighth book of his treatise on agriculture. He identifies Tanagrian, Rhodic, Chalkidic and Median (commonly misidentified as Melian) breeds, which have an impressive appearance, a quarrelsome nature and were used for cockfighting by the Greeks. For farming, native (Roman) chickens are to be preferred, or a cross between native hens and Greek cocks. Dwarf chickens are nice to watch because of their size but have no other advantages.
Per Columella, the ideal flock consists of 200 birds, which can be supervised by one person if someone is watching for stray animals. White chickens should be avoided as they are not very fertile and are easily caught by eagles or goshawks. One cock should be kept for five hens. In the case of Rhodian and Median cocks that are very heavy and therefore not much inclined to sex, only three hens are kept per cock. The hens of heavy fowls are not much inclined to brood; therefore their eggs are best hatched by normal hens. A hen can hatch no more than 15-23 eggs, depending on the time of year, and supervise no more than 30 hatchlings. Eggs that are long and pointed give more male, rounded eggs mainly female hatchlings.
Per Columella, chicken coops should face southeast and lie adjacent to the kitchen, as smoke is beneficial for the animals. Coops should consist of three rooms and possess a hearth. Dry dust or ash should be provided for dust-baths.
According to Columella, chicken should be fed on barley groats, small chick-peas, millet and wheat bran, if they are cheap. Wheat itself should be avoided as it is harmful to the birds. Boiled ryegrass (Lollium sp.) and the leaves and seeds of alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) can be used as well. Grape marc can be used, but only when the hens stop laying eggs, that is, about the middle of November; otherwise eggs are small and few. When feeding grape marc, it should be supplemented with some bran. Hens start to lay eggs after the winter solstice, in warm places around the first of January, in colder areas in the middle of February. Parboiled barley increases their fertility; this should be mixed with alfalfa leaves and seeds, or vetches or millet if alfalfa is not at hand. Free-ranging chickens should receive two cups of barley daily.
Columella advises farmers to slaughter hens that are older than three years, because they no longer produce sufficient eggs.

As part of the Xerox exit strategy from the computer industry, Xerox retained IBM to migrate their business systems to IBM technology. As part of IBM's compensation for the migration, IBM acquired the SDS/SAPE software, reportedly for a contract credit of $80,000. The SAPE software was given by IBM to the founding ex-IBM employees in exchange for founding stock provided to IBM, reportedly 8%. It may be noted that, at the time they left IBM, the ex-employees were quite senior engineers in IBM Germany rather than founding engineers in the sense of Hewlett-Packard's founders.

Birth and early life
Narendranath Dutta was born in Shimla Pally, Kolkata, India on January 12, 1863, son of Viswanath Dutta and Bhuvaneswari Devi. From a very early age, he showed a precocious mind and keen memory. As a boy he practiced meditation. While at school, he was recognized early on as an academic genius, and showed excellence in games of various kinds. Even when he was young, he questioned the validity of superstitious customs and discrimination based on caste and religion.
In 1879, Narendra entered the Presidency College, Calcutta for higher studies. After one year, he joined the Scottish Church College, Calcutta and studied philosophy. During the course, he studied western logic, western philosophy and history of European nations.
Questions started to arise in young Narendra's mind about God and the presence of God. This made him associate with the Brahmo Samaj, an important religious movement of the time, led by Keshub Chunder Sen. And along with his classmate and friend Brajendra Nath Seal, he regularly attended meetings of the breakaway Sadharan Brahmo Samaj. Later they would part ways with Dutta aligning himself with Keshub Chunder Sen's Nava Vidhan and Seal staying on as an initiated member. During this time spent together, both Dutta and Seal sought to understand the intricacies of faith, progress and spiritual insight into the works of John Stuart Mill, Auguste Comte, Herbert Spencer and G.W.F. Hegel.
But the Samaj's congregational prayers and devotional songs could not satisfy Narendra's zeal to realize God. He would ask leaders of the Brahmo Samaj whether they have seen God, but their answers did not satisfy his quest for knowledge. Approximately 5000 years ago, an ink for blacking the raised surfaces of pictures and texts carved in stone was developed in China. This early ink was a mixture of soot from pine smoke, lamp oil, and gelatin from animal skins and musk. Other early cultures also developed many colors of ink from available berries, plants and minerals.
The India ink used in ancient India since at least the 4th century BC was called masi, which was an admixture of several chemical components.[1] Indian documents written in Kharosthi with ink have been unearthed in Chinese Turkestan.[2] The practice of writing with ink and a sharp pointed needle was common in early South India.[3] Several Jain sutras in India were compiled in ink.[4] In India, the carbon black from which India ink is produced is obtained by burning bones, tar, pitch, and other substances.[5]
In ancient Rome, atramentum was used. In an article for the Christian Science Monitor, Sharon J. Huntington describes these other historical inks:
About 1,600 years ago, a popular ink recipe was created. The recipe was used for centuries. Iron "salts," such as ferrous sulfate (made by treating iron with sulfuric acid), was mixed with tannin from gallnuts (they grow on trees) and a thickener. When first put to paper, this ink is bluish-black. Over time it fades to a dull brown.
Scribes in medieval Europe (about AD 800 to 1500) wrote on sheepskin parchment. One 12th century ink recipe called for hawthorn branches to be cut in the spring and left to dry. Then the bark was pounded from the branches and soaked in water for eight days. The water was boiled until it thickened and turned black. Wine was added during boiling. The ink was poured into special bags and hung in the sun. Once dried, the mixture was mixed with wine and iron salt over a fire to make the final ink.
The reservoir fountain pen dates back to 953, when Ma'ād al-Mu'izz, the caliph of Egypt, demanded a pen which would not stain his hands or clothes, and was provided with a pen which held ink in a reservoir and delivered it to the nib via gravity and capillary action.[6][7]
In the 15th century, a new type of ink had to be developed in Europe for the printing press by Johannes Gutenberg. Two types of ink were prevalent at the time: the Greek and Roman writing ink (soot, glue, and water) and the 12th century variety composed of ferrous sulfate, gall, gum, and water.[8] Neither of these handwriting inks could adhere to printing surfaces without creating blurs. Eventually an oily, varnish-like ink made of soot, turpentine, and walnut oil was created specifically for the printing press.

In large numbers of cases, women in monogamous relationships are becoming infected because their husbands have had multiple sexual partners. A 2008 study suggests an increase in HIV prevalence among women could also be related to intimate partner violence. 1 Women currently account for 39% of HIV infections in India, and it is thought that this figure is rising. 2
Another significant trend is that most of the people becoming infected are in the sexually active and economically productive 15 to 44 age group. This means that most people living with HIV are in the prime of their working lives. Many are supporting families.
The people living with HIV in India are incredibly diverse, and many would not be considered to be members of ‘high-risk groups’. Nonetheless, it is possible to identify certain populations that face a proportionately greater risk than others. These risk groups include sex workers, injecting drug users, truck drivers, migrant workers and men who have sex with men.
sex workers:
Sex work is very widespread in India, and occurs on a much larger scale than in many other countries. Women often get involved as a result of poverty, marital break-up, or because they are forced into it. Although sex work is not strictly illegal in India, associated activities - such as running a brothel – are. The government has plans to introduce stricter legislation in regard to sex work, a move that has been opposed by organised sex worker groups who claim that such legislation would just push the trade underground and make it harder to regulate. 3 It would also make it more difficult to reach sex workers with information about HIV, at a time when misinformation about AIDS among this group is rife – for instance, one national study suggests that 42% of sex workers believe that they can tell whether a client has HIV on the basis of their physical appearance.
Sex workers in the city of Mysore, southern India, are heavily affected by the AIDS epidemic. Around 26% of sex workers in Mysore are living with HIV – a situation that is unsurprising given that only 14% of sex workers in the city use condoms consistently with clients, and 91% never use condoms during sex with their regular partners.5 In comparison, 80-90% of sex workers in Tamil Nadu state report condom use, which correlates with a relatively low HIV prevalence of 9%. 6
One way in which authorities are trying to tackle the epidemic among sex workers in Mysore is through a ‘smart card’ scheme. Sex workers are provided with cards that contain their medical details, which must be presented at a health check up at least once every three months to remain valid. On the condition that these appointments are attended, the card can be used to get discounts for food and clothes in certain shops. As well as encouraging sex workers to look after their health, this initiative raises sex worker’s self-esteem by integrating them into mainstream culture. In turn, this can help them to taker a firmer stance on condom use when negotiating with clients.
Another positive initiative – possibly the most successful of its kind in India - has been the Sonagachi project, named after the district of central Kolkata (Calcutta) where it is based. This project was started in 1992, with the aim of reaching out to sex worker communities and helping them to overcome HIV on their own terms. Its approach is based around three R’s: Respect, Reliance and Recognition – respecting sex workers, relying on them to run the program, and recognising their professional and human rights. Sex workers have been trained to act as peer-educators, and sent to brothels to teach others about HIV and AIDS, and the importance of using condoms with clients. The campaign also addresses the social and practical barriers that prevent sex workers from using a condom. Madams and pimps are educated about the economic benefits of enforcing condom use in their brothels, and police have been persuaded to stop raiding brothels, because such raids often resulted in sex workers losing income, making them less likely to insist on condom use. 9
By helping to put sex workers in a position where they can respond to their own needs, the Sonagachi project has achieved impressive results. Between 1992 and 1995, condom use among sex workers rose from 27% to 82%. By 2001, it was 86%. 10 The project continues to have an impact, with HIV prevalence among sex workers in the area falling from 11% in 2001 to less than 4% by 2004. 11 The Sonagachi project has become internationally famous for its achievements, and the UN has used the project as a ‘best practice’ model for other sex worker projects around the world.
INJECTING DRUG USERS:
Nationally, HIV prevalence among injecting drug users appears to have declined slightly in recent years, from 13% in 2003 to 10% in 2005. 13 However, transmission through injecting drug use is still a major driving factor in the spread of HIV in India, particularly in north-eastern areas, such as Manipur and Nagaland and urban areas outside the north, such as Mumbai, Kolkata and Chennai. New epidemics fuelled by drug use are also emerging in Dehli, West Bengal and Pubjab. 14
The alarming levels of infection occurring through needle-sharing have implications that extend beyond networks of drug users. Some of those who inject drugs are also sex workers or truck drivers, and many are sexually active, which can result in infection being passed on to their partners. Experts have argued that there needs to be more information aimed at both injecting drug users and their sexual partners.
The Indian government’s approach to drug use is based around law-enforcement and prosecution, with very little done in terms of treating drug users or helping them to stop using drugs. Harm reduction – a method of HIV prevention that has been successful in other countries, which acknowledges that drug use occurs and seeks ways to reduce HIV transmission in this context – has not been adopted in the government’s drug policies. 16 Some states, however, such as Manipur, have adopted their own harm reduction policies and consider that:
“Harm reduction is the urgent, practicable and feasible HIV prevention method among Injecting Drug Users and their sex partners.”
In the majority of Indian states, though, tough regulations on drug users make it hard to reach this group with HIV messages, and to survey how they are being affected by the epidemic.
TRUCK DRIVERS:
India has one of the largest road networks in the world, involving millions of drivers and helpers. Truck drivers spend long periods of time away from home, and it is common practice for them to have relations with sex workers while on the road. 24-34% of truck drivers in various surveys have reported engaging in sex with commercial sex workers. 18 Sometimes, this occurs at roadside ‘dhabas’, which act as both brothels and hotels for truck drivers. In other cases, drivers stop to pick up women by the side of the road, and transport them to another area after they have had sex with them. Both truck drivers and sex workers move from area to area, often unaware that they are infected with HIV.
”There is no entertainment. It is day-in-day-out driving... When they stop, they drink, dine and have sex with women. Then they transfer HIV from urban to rural settings.“19
There have been a number of major HIV/STI prevention projects aimed at truckers, many of which have aimed to promote condom use. Some of these projects include not just truckers, but also other stakeholders such as gas station owners and employees. A specific example from Mumbai is the AIDS Workplace Awareness campaign, which is mandatory and which targets the drivers at the regional transport authority, where the drivers get their licenses renewed annually.
Other campaigns have targeted the wives and partners of truck drivers, who often become infected when their partner returns home after a long absence. Yet as the testimony of one woman in Vijayavada demonstrates, these campaigns do not always manage to reach those at risk:
“My husband is a truck driver and I got HIV through him. I had never heard of HIV or condoms before that and because I can't read, I couldn't understand any of the posters or banners.”
There are signs that some efforts to prevent HIV among truck drivers have been successful. For example, a recent survey of truck drivers in Tamil Nadu - carried out after an HIV prevention program - found that the proportion of drivers who reported engaging in commercial sex declined from 14% in 1996 to 2% in 2003. Of those who did report having commercial sex, the proportion that had not used a condom the last time they did so fell from 45% to 9%.
MEN WHO HAVE SEX WITH MEN:
Sex between men is highly stigmatised in India and is not openly talked about, making it easy for people to underestimate how commonly it occurs. Studies have shown that sexual activity between men is relatively common in both urban and rural areas of India, although it is illegal.
In India, many men who have sex with men (MSM) do not consider themselves homosexual, and a large number have female partners. A large study in Andhra Pradesh found that 42% of MSM in the sample were married, that 50% had had sexual relations with a woman within the past three months and that just under half had not used a condom. 24 As such, unprotected sex between men can also present a risk to any women that they may subsequently have sex with.
The stigma surrounding MSM, and the fact that their lifestyles are criminalised, makes it hard for both the government and NGOs to reach them with information about HIV. Outreach workers and peer educators working with MSM have frequently been harassed by police, and in some cases arrested. In 2001, four members of the Naz Foundation Trust (an Indian NGO that works with MSM and other groups affected by HIV) were jailed for 47 days after police raided their offices:
“I was arrested for promoting homosexuality. The leaflets we use for our outreach work were dubbed obscene. The police claimed that the replica of a penis used to demonstrate the proper use of condoms was actually a sex toy!” - Arif Jafar, Naz Foundation
Since conditions are so restrictive, there is little information available to MSM in India. Because so many MSM also have heterosexual relationships, there is a high chance that rising levels of infection among MSM in India will aggravate the epidemic among the general population.
MIGRANT WORKERS:
Large numbers of Indians have moved around within India, to neighbouring countries or overseas, in order to work. In some parts of India, three out of four households include a migrant.
“Being mobile in and of itself is not a risk factor for HIV infection. It is the situations encountered and the behaviours possibly engaged in during mobility or migration that increase vulnerability and risk regarding HIV/AIDS.” - UNAIDS
In many cases, migration does not change an individual’s sexual behaviour, but leads them to take their established sexual behaviour to areas where there is a higher prevalence of HIV. For some, though, migration does change their sexual behaviour. Long working hours, isolation from their family and movement between areas may increase the likelihood that an individual will become involved in casual sexual relationships, which in turn may increase the risk of HIV transmission. Cultural and language barriers can also make it harder for workers to access health services and information about sexual health when they are away from their home communities.

Although treatments for AIDS and HIV can slow the course of the disease, there is currently no vaccine or cure. So who actually owns the Internet? There are two answers to this question:
Nobody
Lots of people
If you think of the Internet as a unified, single entity, then no one owns it. There are organizations that determine the Internet's structure and how it works, but they don't have any ownership over the Internet itself. No government can lay claim to owning the Internet, nor can any company. The Internet is like the telephone system -- no one owns the whole thing.
In the beginning, there was ARPANETARPANET was a network of computers housed in various universities, government agencies and research facilities. The people who built ARPANET designed many of the protocols that the Internet uses today. ARPANET connected to several other computer networks and the Internet was born. The agency responsible for ARPANET was the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), a branch of the United States Department of Defense (DoD). Since ARPANET began as a U.S. government-sponsored project, you could argue that at one time, the U.S. government owned the Internet.
From another point of view, thousands of people and organizations own the Internet. The Internet consists of lots of different bits and pieces, each of which has an owner. Some of these owners can control the quality and level of access you have to the Internet. They might not own the entire system, but they can impact your Internet experience.
The physical network that carries Internet traffic between different computer systems is the Internet backbone. In the early days of the Internet, ARPANET served as the system's backbone. Today, several large corporations provide the routers and cable that make up the Internet backbone. These companies are upstream Internet Service Providers (ISPs). That means that anyone who wants to access the Internet must ultimately work with these companies, which include:

Verizon
AT&T
Qwest
Sprint
IBM
Then you have all the smaller ISPs. Many individual consumers and businesses subscribe to ISPs that aren't part of the Internet backbone. These ISPs negotiate with the upstream ISPs for Internet access. Cable and DSL companies are examples of smaller ISPs. Such companies are concerned with what the industry calls the last mile -- the distance between the end consumer and Internet connectivity.

Within the backbone are Internet Exchange Points (IXPs), which are physical connections between networks that allow data exchanges. For example, while Sprint, Verizon and AT&T provide part of the Internet backbone's infrastructure, the three networks aren't intertwined. They connect together at an IXP. Several companies and non-profit organizations administer IXPs.
The individual computer networks that make up the Internet can have owners. Every ISP has its own network. Several nations' governments oversee computer networks. Many companies have local area networks (LANs) that link to the Internet. Each of these networks is both a part of the Internet and its own separate entity. Depending on local laws, the owners of these networks can control the level of access users have to the Internet.
You might consider yourself to be an owner of the Internet. Do you own a device that you use to connect to the Internet? If so, that means the device you own becomes part of the enormous inter-networked system. You are the proud owner of part of the Internet -- it's just a very small part.

Prior to the widespread internetworking that led to the Internet, most communication networks were limited by their nature to only allow communications between the stations on the network, and the prevalent computer networking method was based on the central mainframe method. In the 1960s, computer researchers, Levi C. Finch and Robert W. Taylor pioneered calls for a joined-up global network to address interoperability problems. Concurrently, several research programs began to research principles of networking between separate physical networks, and this led to the development of Packet switching. These included Donald Davies (NPL), Paul Baran (RAND Corporation), and Leonard Kleinrock's MIT and UCLA research programs.
This led to the development of several packet switched networking solutions in the late 1960s and 1970s, including ARPANET, and X.25. Additionally, public access and hobbyist networking systems grew in popularity, including UUCP. They were however still disjointed separate networks, served only by limited gateways between networks. This led to the application of packet switching to develop a protocol for inter-networking, where multiple different networks could be joined together into a super-framework of networks. By defining a simple common network system, the Internet protocol suite, the concept of the network could be separated from its physical implementation. This spread of inter-network began to form into the idea of a global inter-network that would be called 'The Internet', and this began to quickly spread as existing networks were converted to become compatible with this. This spread quickly across the advanced telecommunication networks of the western world, and then began to penetrate into the rest of the world as it became the de-facto international standard and global network. However, the disparity of growth led to a digital divide that is still a concern today.
Following commercialisation and introduction of privately run Internet Service Providers in the 1980s, and its expansion into popular use in the 1990s, the Internet has had a drastic impact on culture and commerce. This includes the rise of near instant communication by e-mail, text based discussion forums, the World Wide Web. Investor speculation in new markets provided by these innovations would also lead to the inflation and collapse of the Dot-com bubble, a major market collapse. But despite this, Internet continues to grow.

The compact disc is a successful spin-off of the much less successful Laserdisc technology. In 1979, Sony and Philips Consumer Electronics set up a joint task force of engineers to design a new digital audio disc. The task force, led by prominent members Kees Schouhamer Immink and Toshitada Doi (土井利忠), progressed the research into laser technology and optical discs that had been started by Philips in 1977.[2]
After a year of experimentation and discussion, the taskforce produced the Red Book, the Compact Disc standard. Philips contributed the general manufacturing process, based on video Laserdisc technology. Philips also contributed Eight-to-Fourteen Modulation (EFM), which offers both a long playing time and a high resilience against disc defects such as scratches and fingerprints, while Sony contributed the error-correction method, CIRC. The Compact Disc Story,[3] told by a former member of the taskforce, gives background information on the many technical decisions made, including the choice of the sampling frequency, playing time, and disc diameter. According to Philips, the Compact Disc was thus "invented collectively by a large group of people working as a team."[4]
The first CD that was pressed in Hanover was a recording of Herbert von Karajan conducting the Alpine Symphony by Richard Strauss.[5] In August 1982 the real pressing was ready to begin in the new factory, not far from the place where Emil Berliner had produced his first gramophone record 93 years earlier. (Deutsche Grammophon, Berliner’s company, had by now become a part of PolyGram.) CDs and Sony's CD player CDP-101 reached the market on October 1, 1982 in Japan, and early the following year in the United States and other markets. This event is often seen as the "Big Bang" of the digital audio revolution. The new audio disc was enthusiastically received, especially in the early-adopting classical music and audiophile communities and its handling quality received particular praise. As the price of players sank rapidly, the CD began to gain popularity in the larger popular and rock music markets. The first artist to sell a million copies on CD was Dire Straits, with their 1985 album Brothers in Arms.[6] In 1986 Queen became the first artist to have their entire catalogue converted to the format.[7]
The CD was originally thought of as an evolution of the gramophone record, rather than primarily as a data storage medium. Only later did the concept of an "audio file" arise, and the generalising of this to any data file. From its origins as a music format, Compact Disc has grown to encompass other applications. In June 1985, the CD-ROM (read-only memory) and, in 1990, CD-Recordable were introduced, also developed by Sony and Philips.

Water is a common chemical substance that is essential for the survival of all known forms of life. In typical usage, water refers only to its liquid form or state, but the substance also has a solid state, ice, and a gaseous state, water vapor or steam. About 1.460 petatonnes (Pt) (1021kilograms) of water covers 71% of the Earth's surface, mostly in oceans and other large water bodies, with 1.6% of water below ground in aquifers and 0.001% in the air as vapor, clouds (formed of solid and liquid water particles suspended in air), and precipitation.[1] Saltwater oceans hold 97% of surface water, glaciers and polar ice caps 2.4%, and other land surface water such as rivers, lakes and ponds 0.6%. Some of the Earth's water is contained within water towers, biological bodies, manufactured products, and food stores. Other water is trapped in ice caps, glaciers, aquifers, or in lakes, sometimes providing fresh water for life on land.
Water moves continually through a cycle of evaporation or transpiration (evapotranspiration), precipitation, and runoff, usually reaching the sea. Winds carry water vapor over land at the same rate as runoff into the sea, about 36 Tt per year. Over land, evaporation and transpiration contribute another 71 Tt per year to the precipitation of 107 Tt per year over land. Clean, fresh drinking water is essential to human and other life. However, in many parts of the world - especially developing countries - there is a water crisis, and it is estimated that by 2025 more than half of the world population will be facing water-based vulnerability.[2] Water plays an important role in the world economy, as it functions as a solvent for a wide variety of chemical substances and facilitates industrial cooling and transportation. The earliest construction cements are as old as construction,[1] and were non-hydraulic. Wherever primitive mud bricks were used, they were bedded together with a thin layer of clay slurry. Mud-based materials were also used for rendering on the walls of timber or wattle anddaub structures. Lime was probably used for the first time as an additive in these renders, and for stabilizing mud floors. A "daub" consisting of mud, cow dung and lime produces a tough coating, due to coagulation by the lime, of proteins in the cow dung. This simple system was common in Europe until quite recent times. With the advent of fired bricks, and their use in larger structures, various cultures started to experiment with higher-strength mortars based on bitumen (in Mesopotamia), gypsum (in Egypt) and lime (in many parts of the world).
It is uncertain where it was first discovered that a combination of hydrated non-hydraulic lime and a pozzolan produces a hydraulic mixture, but concrete made from such mixtures was first used on a large scale by the Romans. They used both natural pozzolans (trass or pumice) and artificial pozzolans (ground brick or pottery) in these concretes. Many excellent examples of structures made from these concretes are still standing, notably the huge monolithic dome of the Pantheon in Rome. The use of structural concrete disappeared in medieval Europe, although weak pozzolanic concretes continued to be used as a core fill in stone walls and columns.

When did the first train run in India?
The customary answer to this question is 3:35pm on April 16th, 1853, when a train with 14 railway carriages and 400 guests left Bombay's Bori Bunder for Thane, with a 21-gun salute. It was hauled by three locomotives: Sindh, Sultan, and Sahib. The journey took an hour and fifteen minutes.
That, however, was just the first commercial passenger service in India. In fact, a steam loco, Thomason, had been used for hauling construction material in Roorkee for the Solani viaduct in 1851 (it began working there on 22nd December 1851, to be exact). The Solani viaduct construction was a part of the Ganges Canal project, started in 1845. The viaduct had 15 arches and spanned the 4km-wide Solani valley (about 145km north-east of New Delhi). Earth for the approach embankments was transported along light rail lines about 5 to 10 km long from Piran Kaliyar to Roorkee. Standard gauge wagons were used, built from parts brought over from England, and hauled by men and later horses. In late 1851, the locomotive Thomason (named for the engineer on the project) was assembled on the spot from parts transported from Calcutta. It hauled two wagons at a time, at a speed of about 6km/h. It did not last very long, and after about 9 months India's first steam locomotive died a spectacular death with a boiler explosion, reportedly to the delight of the construction workers who had viewed it more as a hindrance than help. Hughes' book states that this was a six-wheeled tank engine, probably a 2-2-2WT built by E. B. Wilson, and of standard gauge. Some details of the wagons and the use of the locomotive are in Sir Proby T Cautley's "Report on the Ganges Canal Works" (3 volumes, 1860).

Doordarshan's Direct-to-Home (DTH) satellite television service — DD Direct + — will be commissioned ``very shortly,'' says a release from the public broadcaster.
The service will initially offer a bouquet of 30 television channels, of which 17 will be Doordarshan's, directly to the users' premises. It can be accessed with a ``small'' dish and a set-top box.
Barring the initial investment on the equipment, there will be no monthly subscription for the viewers as Doordarshan has decided to offer the DTH service as a free-to-air bouquet.
The 30 channels will be beamed through three transponders of New Skies Satellite (NSS-6) located at 95 degrees East.
DD Direct +, whose trial transmission has been in progress since April, ``is totally digital up to the viewers' premises and hence the reception quality of the channels would be of highest international quality.'' What is DTH?
DTH stands for Direct-To-Home television. DTH is defined as the reception of satellite programmes with a personal dish in an individual home.
DTH does away with the need for the local cable operator and puts the broadcaster directly in touch with the consumer. Only cable operators can receive satellite programmes and they then distribute them to individual homes.

A DTH network consists of a broadcasting centre, satellites, encoders, multiplexers, modulators and DTH receivers.
A DTH service provider has to lease Ku-band transponders from the satellite. The encoder converts the audio, video and data signals into the digital format and the multiplexer mixes these signals. At the user end, there will be a small dish antenna and set-top boxes to decode and view numerous channels. On the user's end, receiving dishes can be as small as 45 cm in diametre.
DTH is an encrypted transmission that travels to the consumer directly through a satellite. DTH transmission is received directly by the consumer at his end through the small dish antenna. A set-top box, unlike the regular cable connection, decodes the encrypted transmission

How does DTH really differ from cable TV?
The way DTH reaches a consumer's home is different from the way cable TV does. In DTH, TV channels would be transmitted from the satellite to a small dish antenna mounted on the window or rooftop of the subscriber's home. So the broadcaster directly connects to the user. The middlemen like local cable operators are not there in the picture.
DTH can also reach the remotest of areas since it does away with the intermediate step of a cable operator and the wires (cables) that come from the cable operator to your house. As we explained above, in DTH signals directly come from the satellite to your DTH dish.
Also, with DTH, a user can scan nearly 700 channels!

The National Highways have a total length of 66,590 km to serve as the arterial network of the country. The development of National Highways is the responsibility of the Government of India. NHDP Phase I : NHDP Phase I was approved by Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) in December 2000 at an estimated cost of Rs.30,000 crore comprises mostly of GQ (5,846 km) and NS-EW Corridor (981km), port connectivity (356 km) and others (315 km).
NHDP Phase II : NHDP Phase II was approved by CCEA in December 2003 at an estimated cost of Rs.34,339 crore (2002 prices) comprises mostly NS-EW Corridor (6,161 km) and other National Highways of 486 km length, the total length being 6,647 km. The total length of Phase II is 6,647 km.
NHDP Phase-III: Government approved on 5.3.2005 upgradation and 4 laning of 4,035 km of National Highways on BOT basis at an estimated cost of Rs. 22,207 crores (2004 prices). Government approved in April 2007 upgradation and 4 laning at 8074 km at an estimated cost of Rs. 54,339 crore.
NHDP Phase V: CCEA has approved on 5.10.2006 six laning of 6,500 km of existing 4 lane highways under NHDP Phase V (on DBFO basis). Six laning of 6,500 km includes 5,700 km of GQ and other stretches.
NHDP Phase VI: CCEA has approved on November 2006 for 1000 km of expressways at an estimated cost of Rs. 16680 crs .

Death by misadventure-bruce lee

A foreshadowing of events to come occurred on May 10, 1973, when Lee collapsed in Golden Harvest studios while doing dubbing work for Enter the Dragon. Suffering from full-body seizures and cerebral edema, he was immediately rushed to Hong Kong Baptist Hospital where doctors were able to reduce the swelling through the administration of Mannitol and revive him. These same symptoms that occurred in his first collapse were later repeated on the day of his death.[77]
On July 20, 1973, Lee was in Hong Kong, due to have dinner with former James Bond star George Lazenby, with whom he intended to make a film. According to Lee's wife Linda, Lee met producer Raymond Chow at 2 p.m. at home to discuss the making of the movie Game of Death. They worked until 4 p.m. and then drove together to the home of Lee's colleague Betty Ting Pei, a actress. The three went over the script at Pei's home, and then Chow left to attend a dinner meeting.
A short time later, Lee complained of a headache, and Ting Pei gave him an analgesic (painkiller), Equagesic, which contained both aspirin and a muscle relaxant. Around 7:30 p.m., he went to lie down for a nap. After Lee did not turn up for dinner, Chow came to the apartment but could not wake Lee up. A doctor was summoned, who spent ten minutes attempting to revive him before sending him by ambulance to Queen Elizabeth Hospital. However, Lee was dead by the time he reached the hospital. There was no visible external injury; however, his brain had swollen considerably, from 1,400 to 1,575 grams (a 13% increase). Lee was 32 years old. The only two substances found during the autopsy were Equagesic and trace amounts of cannabis. On October 15, 2005, Chow stated in an interview that Lee died from a hypersensitivity to the muscle relaxant in Equagesic, which he described as a common ingredient in painkillers. When the doctors announced Lee's death officially, it was ruled a "death by misadventure."
Dr. Langford, who treated Lee for his first collapse, stated after his death that, "There's not a question in my mind that cannabis should have been named as the presumptive cause of death."[78] He also believed that, "Equagesic was not at all involved in Bruce's first collapse."[79] Professor R.D. Teare, who had overseen over 100,000 autopsies, was the top expert assigned to the Lee case. Dr. Teare declared that the presence of cannabis was mere coincidence, and added that it would be "irresponsible and irrational" to say that it might have triggered Lee's death. His conclusion was that the death was caused by an acute cerebral edema due to a reaction to compounds present in the prescription pain killing drug Equagesic.[80] Dr. Peter Wu's preliminary opinion was that the cause of death could have been a reaction to cannabis and Equagesic. Dr. Wu would later back off from this position however:
"Professor Teare was a forensic scientist recommended by Scotland Yard; he was brought in as an expert on cannabis and we can't contradict his testimony. The dosage of cannabis is neither precise nor predictable, but I've never known of anyone dying simply from taking it."[81]
The exact details of Lee's death are a subject of controversy.
His wife Linda returned to her home town of Seattle, and had him buried at lot 276 of Lakeview Cemetery. Pallbearers at his funeral on July 31, 1973, included Steve McQueen, James Coburn, Chuck Norris, George Lazenby, Dan Inosanto, Taky Kimura, Peter Chin, and his brother, Robert Lee.
His iconic status and young and unusual death fed many theories about his death, including murder involving the Triad society and a supposed curse on him and his family.
The curse theory was extended to his son Brandon Lee also an actor, who died, 20 years after his father, in a bizarre accident while filming The Crow at the age of 28. It was released after his death and gained cult status, as his father's last film had been, and did. (The Crow was completed with the use of computer-generated imagery and a stunt double in the few, but critical, scenes that remained to be filmed.) Brandon Lee was buried beside his father.

In 1993 a biopic of Lee's life titled Dragon: The Bruce Lee Story was released in which Lee was portrayed by Jason Scott Lee (no relation).
In April, 2007, Chinese state media announced that its national broadcaster had started filming a 40-part TV series on Lee titled The Legend of Bruce Lee to promote Chinese culture for the 2008 Beijing Summer Olympics.[83] Lee will be portrayed by Chan Kwok Kuen in the series.
On August 22, 2007, Fruit Chan announced that he will make a film on Bruce Lee's early years, in Chinese, entitled Kowloon City, produced by John Woos producer Terence Chang, and set in 1950s Hong Kong.
Stanley Kwan stated that he was talking with Lee's family to make a biographical film on Lee. Kwan says that his film will look at how Bruce Lee was affected by the absence of his father and how he brought up his own son, Brandon Lee.
